Hatching eggs are selected from several breeding groups for the best possible assortment of genetics and colours from the four imports that we work with.   All, are pure Icelandic landrace chickens.  Our breeding stock was obtained from the original importers and from a few known, reputable breeders.  They come in a variety of colours and comb types.    We almost always have hatching eggs available, but like to have a week or two notice before shipping.

At times we experience higher than normal demand for our hatching eggs and extras can be in short supply. We're always happy to send them when available.

Packaging Your Hatching Eggs for Shipping:

Each egg is wrapped tissue and placed in an egg carton, each carton is then wrapped in bubble wrap.  Whenever possible, I use Icelandic sheep's wool from our flock of Icelandic sheep to insulate and cushion your hatching eggs on all sides of the USPS Flat Rate Box. It can smell rather “sheepy” because it is raw, unwashed, unprocessed wool, so you should wash your hands with soap and water after handling it.  It works extremely well for shipping in both cold and warmer weather and holds up well to rough treatment during the shipping process, it is also biodegradable and has many uses.

I will begin hatching for the 2019 season in late February and March, for local pick-up orders.  I expect to begin shipping chicks in late March or early April, this season, weather permitting and continue until it becomes too warm to ship them safely, usually late May or first week in June.  If there is some interest, I may resume again in the fall.   Remember to pre order and pay for your chicks well before the hatching dates.  I only hatch the number of eggs that I have chick orders for.  We fill up quickly, so please don't be discouraged if we're unable to get to you this season, our chicks are worth waiting for.    We will have a limited number of chicks and/or started birds available for local pick-up this summer,  let us know if you are willing to pick your birds up at our farm.  There is no minimum for local pick up, you can buy as few as you like based on availability.  If you want larger numbers (12 or more), you need to actually place an order.

We do not keep any other breeds of poultry on our farm, to insure the purity and preservation of our Icelandic chicken's genetic antiquity.   We are NPIP certified #35-0593 and AI clean.

Visit our Facebook Page, 'Icelandic Chickens of Whippoorwill Farm' for photos and more information about our preservation flock of Viking Chickens.

We are not a commercial hatchery, we take limited, individual hatching orders for day old, straight run, un-sexed, Icelandic chicks.  I run 3 GQF Sportsman incubators and hatch weekly during the hatching season.  Each weeks hatch is divided between 6-8 individuals, so there are a limited number of 'spots' open each week.  Sometimes hatches don't go as planned and there may only be 15 chicks for each order, if it's a great hatch, there may be more than 25 chicks for each, in which case I include those as free extras.  For chick orders, one should plan on 25 chicks which is what you will be billed for, if there is fewer than 25, you will be sent a refund for any missing chicks from your order.  If you are looking for 50 or more chicks, contact us to schedule a hatch.  Shipping charges are the same for 50 chicks as for 25.   There are no refunds or replacements for chicks lost in shipping.

Day old chicks are $8, started, un-sexed chicks are $10-$15, confirmed pullets are $25 each, laying hens are $50.  I will occasionally ship an adult rooster for breeding purposes, otherwise all started birds must be picked up at the farm.  Roosters, when available, are free with the purchase of two or more pullets or laying hens.
